The Poplar Hill Station
The Poplar Hill Generating Plant is a 48-megawatt simple-cycle natural gas facility designed for rapid-response electricity generation. At its core is a GE LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine—one of the industry’s most widely used and reliable models. Known for its high thermal efficiency and agility, the LM6000 allows Poplar Hill to reach full output in less than 10 minutes, making it a key asset in responding to real-time changes in Alberta’s electricity demand. The unit is equipped with dry low NOₓ (DLN) combustors, eliminating the need for water or steam injection while still maintaining low emission levels. Real-time digital controls and monitoring systems ensure optimized performance and environmental compliance.
Role in Alberta Power Grid
Poplar Hill plays a critical role in Alberta’s power system as a fast-start peaking plant and voltage support resource. Strategically located in the northwest region of the province, it provides both real and reactive power during periods of peak electricity demand. The facility is capable of supporting transmission system stability and voltage regulation, even in constrained or high-load conditions. With significant useful life remaining and proven performance history, Poplar Hill remains a flexible, dispatchable generation asset helping to ensure grid reliability across the province.
